Show Notes

NVIDIA is making big moves to secure its future as memory and packaging bottlenecks hit the chip industry hard. With a $1.5 billion bet on Amkor’s Arizona plant, NVIDIA is buying itself more advanced packaging capacity, the critical step where compute chips, high-bandwidth memory, and interconnects are fused into powerful modules. Meanwhile, reports of a mega-collaboration with Korea’s SK Group underscore just how high the stakes are, as NVIDIA locks in memory supply and data center resources at a scale that could top $500 billion. At the same time, prices for graphics cards are surging globally—up more than 20% overnight in China alone—driven by memory shortages and cost hikes that ripple straight to consumers and partners.

But here’s the catch: capacity investments like the Amkor deal take time to deliver, and if they lag, we could see even more price hikes and supply delays into 2026 and beyond. NVIDIA is also flexing its muscle in CPUs, shipping hundreds of thousands of Grace servers and using its Vera chips to speed up its own design work—tighter vertical integration that makes it harder for customers to switch, especially as NVIDIA’s proprietary software gets woven deeper into critical engineering tools.

And now, with the launch of the Open Secure AI Alliance—backed by giants like Microsoft, Adobe, Palantir, and SpaceX—NVIDIA is trying to shape the rules of AI security and open-source development. Whether this encourages real transparency or just deepens reliance on NVIDIA’s stack remains to be seen. Reporting draws from Tom's Hardware, OC3D, BenchLife, TechPowerUp, and eTeknix.
