Europe’s 35 NVIDIA AI Supercomputers

Show Notes
Europe is throwing its weight behind NVIDIA, with 35 new AI supercomputers rolling out across 23 countries—giving over 3 million researchers access to a powerhouse of computing. More than 90% of Europe’s “AI factory” deployments are now NVIDIA-based, with nearly 800 AI exaflops (a metric for massive computing power) deployed or announced since last year. Major builds like Barcelona’s MareNostrum 5, BavariaAI’s Blue Swan, and Italy’s IT4LIA are leaning hard into NVIDIA’s full stack, from chips to software to networking. The upside is speed and scale, but the catch is concentration risk: Europe’s AI infrastructure is becoming deeply locked into one supplier.
But here’s the twist—hyperscalers want leverage. Amazon’s AWS is testing the waters by potentially selling its custom Trainium AI chips directly, a move that could undercut NVIDIA’s dominance on price. The challenge: AWS’s own supply is already sold out, and these chips still depend on TSMC, which also builds for NVIDIA. Plus, without matching NVIDIA’s software ecosystem, Amazon’s hardware is more a bargaining chip than a true industry disruptor. Expect some pilot deals in the next year, but real market shifts hinge on when these chips ship at scale.
Reporting draws on insights from Bloomberg, TechCrunch, NVIDIA Newsroom, and comments from Jensen Huang, C.C. Wei, and Andy Jassy.
