YouTube Secures Global 2027 IIFA Stream

Show Notes
YouTube is shaking up the streaming wars, pulling ahead of Netflix and Disney by doubling down on open technology, ad-driven business, and commerce tools — all while its rivals fork out big money for exclusive creator content. The platform just secured the 2027 International Indian Film Academy Awards for global streaming, stacking live events with digital-only formats, creator collaborations, and watch parties. Their hybrid rights deal keeps domestic TV with ZEE but lets YouTube build a global, creator-fueled engagement machine — a move aimed at defending its growing share of connected TV viewers and wooing brands with diverse ad options.
But here’s the catch: YouTube’s bets hinge on unproven business models and tech adoption. AV2, a new open video format, promises 25–32% better streaming efficiency, but if hardware support lags, cost savings and new features like multi-view events stay stuck on desktops, not TVs. And while YouTube experiments with a performance-based Shorts bonus program and expands shopping affiliate tools into new markets, it’s still paying creators on results — not up-front guarantees like Netflix and Disney. That means creators shoulder more risk, especially as their earnings become tied to Amazon sales and shifting platform rules.
