Show Notes

YouTube is raising Premium prices and pushing more ads, while sports publishers like Sports Studio and TheSoul Group are betting big on free, live sports delivered straight to YouTube’s massive audience, especially in mobile-first markets. In Sub-Saharan Africa, YouTube could capture $1.18 billion in ad revenue by 2031—nearly all of the region’s ad-supported streaming income. The upside is real: free, aggregated sports are a perfect fit for regions with more SIM cards than fixed broadband. But there’s a catch: ad revenue per user is low, local currencies are volatile, and brand safety or rights issues can spark headaches, like the Miami Heat’s recent YouTube mishap that briefly sent fans into a frenzy.

Meanwhile, Spotify is taking the fight to YouTube’s home turf by expanding music video uploads and publishing daily global video charts, hoping to lure music fans with more discovery and playlist action. But YouTube still owns the network effect—recommendations, comments, Shorts, and remixes—while both platforms hike subscription prices, forcing households to choose or put up with heavier ad loads. At the same time, new regulations in places like South Korea are forcing YouTube to block content fast, raising the stakes for compliance and operational costs as the business model shifts.
