Alibaba Centralizes AI, Monetizes Tokens

Show Notes

Alibaba just yanked all of its AI under the CEO and stapled a price tag on it. The new Alibaba Token Hub, led by Eddie Wu, merges Tongyi Lab, the Qwen model service, its assistant team, Wukong for DingTalk workflows, and an AI incubator, with a blunt mission: create, deliver, and apply tokens, the meter that bills AI use. Translation: AI moves from scattered research to a single P&L and billing unit, aiming to fuel agent apps across DingTalk and commerce as core e-commerce softens.

But here’s the catch: monetization can collide with retention. Cloud prices just jumped as much as 34%, a sign of demand that could still push workloads to Tencent or Huawei unless ATH’s tighter app-model-data integration makes switching costly. And after Qwen lead Junyang Lin quit, any licensing squeeze could spook the open-source community. The quarter was soft on sales and net income fell 66%, yet cloud grew 36% year over year. Now Wukong is live and Accio Work lands this month; the question is whether pilots convert to paid fast.

Featuring insights from CEO Eddie Wu and reporting from Reuters.
