Show Notes

AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are making a rare show of unity: on October 1, they launched a satellite joint venture to finally bring direct-to-device satellite coverage to the mainstream—naming industry veteran Paul Roth as interim CEO. By pooling a slice of spectrum and setting shared technical specs, the Big 3 are trying to fast-track satellite access on regular phones, aiming to wipe out rural dead zones and keep networks up during disasters. If they pull it off, it would mean one standard for device makers like Apple and Google to adopt, so features could roll out faster and at lower cost, with smaller carriers and multiple satellite providers able to plug in. But with no hard launch dates, there’s still a question: is this real momentum or just another industry press release?

There’s also a complication: as the carriers standardize, they risk erasing their edge—especially for T-Mobile, which got out front on satellite connections. Pooling specs could turn what was a T-Mobile feature into table stakes for everyone by 2027. Meanwhile, Opensignal’s 2026 awards show T-Mobile dominating 5G coverage and time-on-5G, but not leading in speed or reliability—meaning U.S. carriers still have ground to cover where it counts for real-world experience. The next twelve months will reveal if the JV can deliver a true, cross-carrier satellite-to-phone experience, or if technical and execution risks slow the rollout.
