Show Notes

Versant is betting big on a new playbook across TV and streaming, greenlighting USA Network’s first original series since its asset split with Comcast. “Diplomatic Immunity,” a Rome-set medical drama from the creators behind “Covert Affairs” and “Daredevil: Born Again,” joins a retooled lineup as USA pushes for dependable ad dollars and a stronger hand with cable operators and advertisers. Early ratings for new series “Anna Pigeon” show promise, but the real test is whether these wins can be repeated—and whether outsourcing production to Fox Entertainment Studios pays off, since it’s quick but means less profit from international sales.

But here’s the catch: while USA shores up its cable business, sister company Fandango is quietly testing the waters in film distribution and gearing up to stream a majority of Bundesliga soccer matches. That’s a major shift from linear-only sports and could spark pushback from cable partners if exclusivity is diluted. Fandango’s all-in-one app, new event cinema strategy, and AVOD model are designed for digital growth, but the risk is trading away the very leverage USA needs with distributors.

Meanwhile, MS NOW is rebooting its weekends with Antonia Hylton’s “The Assignment” and a fresh mix of live and taped programming, all aimed at converting viewers into paying members. Featuring insights from Sports Business Journal and Variety.
