Unilever’s Welly Sale Hints McCormick Tie-Up

Show Notes
Hindustan Unilever is about to reveal its latest earnings, and all eyes are on margins. Revenue and profit are inching up—Zee Business pegs sales at Rs 17,430 crore, up 7.3% year-on-year, and profits up 4.3%—but margins are flat at 23%. The company’s growth engine is supposed to be selling more products, yet operating leverage is missing in action. That matters because HUL hiked prices to offset 8-10% inflation, and so far, consumers are still buying. But regulators are turning up the heat, with FSSAI serving notices over health claims, and that could force costly changes just as the company pushes for premiumization. The board’s dividend decision on October 28 will be the real tell: a bump means confidence in cash flow, a hold signals caution.
Meanwhile, Unilever is sharpening its portfolio, selling off the Welly Health brand to private equity and preparing for the big foods combination with McCormick. The plan: recycle capital from smaller brands into faster-growing categories like beauty and home care, and simplify operations. But there’s a tradeoff—retailers liked Welly’s quirky appeal, so Unilever risks leaving sales on the table while private equity bets it can do better.
Growth from emerging markets remains a strong backstop. Unilever Indonesia’s profit is up 26% this year, and Nigeria just quadrupled its interim dividend after boosting both revenues and margins. Add Unilever’s 30th anniversary in Shanghai’s R&D hub, where nearly 300 scientists and next-gen AI are speeding up innovation, and this is a company betting that EM volumes and China’s brains can fund its next act—even as India’s margins and regulatory climate keep everyone guessing.
