Show Notes

Verizon just locked in a multi-billion dollar deal for more than 80 million miles of Corning fiber through 2032, but this isn’t simply about laying cable to more homes. The real play is building a national long-haul backbone to serve the surge in AI data-center traffic, with big names like AWS in the mix. By standardizing on a single, ultra-dense fiber network for everything—residential broadband, 5G backhaul, enterprise, and AI connectivity—Verizon aims to create one asset base that supports multiple revenue streams. CEO Kyle Malady calls it “the physical foundation of America’s AI economy,” but the first deliveries don’t start until 2027.

Here’s the catch: while Verizon gets priority supply and price certainty, it’s committing major capital years before any new revenue is guaranteed. Hyperscalers like AWS will still buy from multiple providers, so exclusivity isn’t the real edge—speed and readiness are. Verizon’s bet is that this dense network lets it win high-value enterprise transport deals and cut costs for consumer services, but smaller players could get squeezed and the risk of overextending on fiber is real if AI demand or broadband take-rates fall short.

Based on reporting from Fierce Network, TelecomLead, and wsj.com, with direct insights from Kyle Malady, CEO of Verizon Business.
